UN expert on a visit to Moldova

An ad hoc meeting with the expert on the rights of persons with disabilities, member of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Gabor Gombos, was held in UNDP headquarters in Chisinau on September 12. Expert’s visit to Moldova is the result of his previous visit in September 2011, which goal was to support Moldovan Government in reforming legal institutions in compliance with the article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The goal of this year’s visit was to offer support in the process of reformation of legal institutions in compliance with the requirements of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.


During the meeting with representatives of civil society working in this field (among which Mental Health Center “SOMATO”, Institute for Human Rights in Moldova, Center for Legal Assistance for Persons with Disabilities, Keystone Human Services International Moldova etc.), Gabor Gombos underlined the importance of ensuring access to people with mental disabilities, who may need assistance to exercise their legal capacity.

The expert also mentioned the need to promote, protect and ensure full and equal exercise by all persons with disabilities, including those with intellectual or psychosocial disabilities, human fundamental rights and freedoms. Another topic of discussion was the issue of implementation of UNCRPD in Moldova, in particular the provisions of Article 33.

In July 2012, we celebrated two years of the Republic of Moldova ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. On this occasion, the Government must provide the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
