
Mental diseases attack children
Mental and behavior disorders and diseases of nervous system are the main maladies to disable Moldovan children.
According to a survey of the National Bureau of Statistics analyzing the situation of children in Moldova, the indicator of mental diseases and behavior disorders is 4,1 cases to one thousand children, and diseases of nervous system – 5,3 cases to one thousand children.
On average, underage children’s invalidity caused by different health problems is characterized by the growth of the number of cases from 16,8 to one thousand children of this age – in 2004, to 19,1 cases to one thousand children – last year.
In fact, the death rate of different maladies of children last year was caused by respiratory system diseases (382 cases per 1000 persons), infectious diseases (70 cases to 1000 persons), diseases of the nervous system (39 cases per 1000 persons) etc.
The quoted survey specifies that, last year, 453 pediatricians worked in the health care system. There were about six doctors to ten thousand children aged 0-17 years old. Statistics show that each sixth child aged under 18 years old was hospitalized in the reported period.
According to NSB, last year, there were some trends of growth of the incidence of sexual maladies such as syphilis and gonorrhea. There were on average per 10,5 cases of syphilis and 6,8 cases of honorrhea to one hundred thousand children aged below 14 years old. Last year, there were eight HIV-positive children in Moldova.
