Assistance for mentally-ill persons from Balti

„Somato” Association from Balti working in the mental health area for more than ten years, provided home assistance for the first 16 mentally-ill persons within a related project.
The president of the Association, Jana Chihai, specified this is a project based of home assistance for beneficiaries provided by a mobile team of experts. The team is a community based service providing social care, medical and psychological assistance at home in order to prevent the beneficiaries’ institutionalization, Jana Chihai said.
The services were provided to the above 16 persons during March-August 2010. Other 44 persons will be provided assistance in the following 18 months.

These activities are implemented by „Somato” Association due to a two-year length project, funded by „Keystone Human Services International”. The project will end in March 2012.

According to official statistics, there are more than three thousand mentally-ill persons in Balti. About 400 of them are children and teenagers. Specialists say the number of people ill of depression and schizophrenia has grown.
